The short answer
Hawaii requires 1,000 hours of post-master's supervised direct clinical experience and 200 hours of clinical supervision, accrued over at least two years. At least 100 of the supervision hours must come from an LMFT with five or more years of clinical experience.
The requirements at a glance
| Requirement | What Hawaiʻi asks for |
| --- | --- |
| Practicum (during your degree) | One year with 300 supervised client contact hours |
| Post-master’s direct clinical experience | 1,000 supervised hours |
| Clinical supervision | 200 hours |
| Of those, with an experienced LMFT | At least 100 hours (LMFT with 5+ years) |
| Time window | At least 2 years |
| Governing law | HRS Chapter 451J, administered by the DCCA |
You may see other states, and even other Hawaiʻi websites, quote 3,000 hours for MFT licensure. That is not Hawaiʻi’s number. Hawaiʻi’s marriage and family therapist pathway is defined by HRS Chapter 451J, and the post-master’s requirement is 1,000 hours of direct supervised clinical experience with 200 hours of supervision. Confirm against the current DCCA application before filing: DCCA licensing (PVL).
How the 200 supervision hours break down
The supervision requirement has a structure:
- At least 100 hours must be provided by a licensed marriage and family therapist with at least five years of clinical experience
- The remaining hours may be provided by another qualified licensed mental health practitioner
This makes your supervisor choice strategic. If your primary supervisor is an experienced LMFT, all 200 hours can happen in one relationship. If not, plan the split early so you are not hunting for a qualifying LMFT in your final year.
The 1,000 direct hours
These are direct clinical hours with clients, couples, and families, earned after your qualifying degree. The two-year minimum means the state wants this experience spread over real time, not compressed. Most candidates working steadily complete both requirements together in two to three years.
Group supervision for LMFT candidates
Group supervision is a valuable and cost-effective part of an LMFT plan. One Hawaiʻi-specific note: under Island Clinical Supervision’s structure, LMFT group sessions are kept to a single membership tier per group, so the clinical depth of each group stays consistent.
The exam and application
Hawaiʻi uses the national MFT examination from the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB), and you apply for both licensure and exam permission through the DCCA. Supervisor verification forms document your hours, which is why an organized, signed-off record matters from month one. The ICS platform keeps that record automatically: sessions log themselves, your supervisor signs off in the app, and the export is board-ready.
